“The Fear of capitalism has compelled socialism to widen freedom, and the fear of socialism has compelled capitalism to increase equality.” Will and Ariel Durant, an American husband and wife writing team whose 11 volume Story of Civilization placed them among the best-known writers of popular philosophy and history. The Lessons of History evolved as a means to address omissions and errors they discovered in their review of the aforementioned Story of Evolution.
They posit a couple of interesting questions: 1) Is it possible to accurately describe and record historical events as the need to decide what information to include or omit will undoubtedly be colored by our own beliefs, consciously or not? 2) Is history a predictor of the future?
